What is Addition?

Addition is one of the most fundamental operations in math. It’s about combining two or more numbers to find a total. For Year 1 students, addition usually focuses on small numbers, up to 20, and involves visual and concrete methods.

For example:

  • 3 + 2 = 5
  • 4 + 6 = 10
  • 7 + 3 = 10

Understanding Totals

The total is the sum of the numbers being added together. Once students are familiar with addition, they can work on identifying totals in different contexts. This can include:

  • Adding up the total number of objects in a group.
  • Finding the total cost when shopping.
  • Summing up points in a game.

This quiz addresses the requirements of the National Curriculum KS1 Maths and Numeracy for children aged 5 and 6 in year 1.

Our ‘finding the total’  worksheets teach the concept of finding how much or how many there are altogether, especially when groups of numbers or objects are added. This concept is important as ‘total’ is one of the first addition words Year 1 children will encounter.
